JOB OPENING #2: PART-TIME SENIOR ACCOUNTANT
The Chris Atwood Foundation is seeking a part-time Senior Accountant to join our staff. This is a new position that has been created because the organization is growing and in need of accounting support in the office on a weekly basis. The CAF has revenues of $800k from grants and charitable contributions, and we need an experienced accountant to help manage the organization’s monthly accounting and grant reporting.
About us:
The Chris Atwood Foundation (CAF) is a community-based harm reduction and recovery support organization serving individuals with substance use disorder in Northern Virginia. Our mission is to save lives from opioid overdose and support recovery from substance use disorder. We do this through educating the public about the disease of addiction, training the public how to administer naloxone to reverse an opioid overdose and providing no cost overdose reversal kits, scholarships to local Recovery Residences, harm reduction education and supplies, and advocating for public policy changes that promote the health and wellbeing of the people we serve. We have recorded over 600 lives saved using our overdose reversal kits, and have passed 6 state laws to improve access to health services for Virginian’s with substance use disorder.
About the position:
This position is expected to take 8 hours (one day) per week and pays $25/hour. This position will be remote at first and potentially permanently remote if the situation is working. You will spend some time each week journalizing the activity in QuickBooks Online (QBO). There are on average 75-100 transactions per month, and they feed directly into QBO through the banking module. The organization has five bank accounts that you will need to reconcile each month, but 95% of the activity flows through the operating checking account. After you finish reconciling, you will need to generate budget-to-actual reports by grant for the Executive Director and the treasurer of the board. The chart of accounts was setup by the treasurer, a CPA with experience working with nonprofit entities. You will need to work with the ED and the treasurer, however, to do a little cleanup of the chart of accounts. A staff member has been doing the data entry for the treasurer to review, reconcile, and issue reports. You will be taking over the data entry, reconciling, and reporting functions. The framework for reporting has been created, but your first project will be to work with the ED and the treasurer to generate actionable grant reports.
About you:
1. You are an experienced accountant who is familiar with GAAP and has experience utilizing QuickBooks Online to prepare financial reports
2. You are familiar with the nuances of nonprofit accounting and reporting
3. You are comfortable tracking activity by class and by grant using the donor/customer function in QBO
4. You are self-directed and are comfortable booking journal entries and generating reports with minimal guidance
5. You are familiar with US GAAP and are comfortable with the distinction between cash basis accounting and
accrual basis accounting
The ideal candidate will:
1. Be passionate about working with a nonprofit on the front lines of the opioid epidemic
2. Be familiar with recent accounting pronouncements and how they affect the grant reporting
If you are interested in joining a growing organization that is making a difference in the world, we hope you will apply!
